Allow me to start with a disclaimer that although, in theory this "how-to" worked, a minor detail was a total FAIL. You will see as I explain below....

Last week I posted a recipe for Homemade Liquid Laundry soap- to accompany this, I've also experimented with The Duggars Inexpensive Fabric Softner Recipe. Below are the easy "how-to" steps for saving money on Laundry Softner.
Materials You Will Need:
5 Gallon Bucket
Liquid Laundry Softner of your choice
Cheap Sponge
Water

Step 1: Dump name-brand liquid laundry softner into 5 gallon bucket.

Step 2: Fill empty softner jug with water, pour into bucket and repeat once more (ratio 1:2)
If you have a sponge with the scrub on it, remove the scrubby first.

Step 3: Take an inexpensive Sponge and cut in half- FAIL FAIL FAIL do not cut in half! My dryer literally SUCKED UP and ate my sponge. It was too small. Leave it uncut.
Step 4: Leave sponges in mixture and cover. Each time you put a load of laundry in the dryer, wring one sponge out slightly and add to dryer with wet clothes.
I just keep this bucket by my dryer, covered, and use it with each dryer load.
I have tried it, I continue to use it- minus the one FAIL portion. I still can't believe my dryer ate my sponge. I hope it doesn't cause any permanent damage, because I sure can't find it- it's somewhere in the duct!

UPDATE 2/4/12
I found my sponges, they were not eaten by the dryer they were eaten by a sock and a pillow case! I still recommend not cutting the sponge though. Nothing like laying your head down and feeling a small lump only to discover it was a sponge :)

Thats a good idea I have a HE washer and my clothes are never soft...it always rinses ALL the softener out....this should work much better than pouring it down the washer drain!.... I'd love for you to share this @CountryMommaCooks Link & Greet party going on now-Sunday midnight…have a wonderful weekend!

  6. Stretch that dollar! Does it work well?

I gave up on buying the fabric softner I love because of the price, but this would help us to be able to have our cake and eat it too!

I can make a smaller batch, since it's just me here and share with my daughter! Great idea.♥♫

  10. I literally loved reading this, I needed a good laugh! I can't wait to try it, I use vinegar as a softener it works wonderfully and IT DOES NOT SMELL. But I would love to have that smell that is a little more than your detergent since I now make my own and the scent is not as potent as I would like.
